TURN OVER A NEW LEAF
By Sara Darling Ignoring the fact that the year has been rather unpredictable, there is no doubt that we had sun during our long hot summer, and that meant a surge in hair follicles for most. Now autumn is kicking in, it’s time to treat your locks to some TLC, so they can get back to their best for next year, and it’s the ideal time to refresh your routine. Whatever the length of your barnett, keeping the ends trim is necessary for hair health and growth and when it comes to frazzled ends, natural moisture is so important. Whether you used lockdown to go au naturel and ditch the bleach, or took advantage of your stylist as soon as salons were open, Hairstory is a brand that should be on your radar for essential maintenance. Hair care, like all personal care, comes from within, and it’s hugely important to remain hydrated. This has a huge effect on the hair, skin and nails so always drink plenty of water and make sure the products you use have hydrating properties. When hair is washed with a normal shampoo, natural protection is stripped away and moisture is artificially restored. New Wash by Hairstory gently cleanses, and fuses the hair with its own essential oils and naturally derived saturated cleansers - without removing hair’s natural sebum. Which is ideal for any hair that needs serious TLC. Avoid habits that cause breakage like tight ponytails, and heat styling, and treat your locks to a gentle daily brush. Experts recommend brushing for up to twenty minutes every day to help distribute the oils from the root right through to the ends to help to keep the hair nourished. Washing for the first time with New Wash is an experience; I knew it wasn’t going to lather like a normal shampoo, even though it came out of the bottle as if it should. But there was no foam. None at all! I added more product to see if that would make a difference, but not a peep! New Wash uses Aloe Vera and a blend of essential oils which combined are stronger and more gentle than a detergent- but because there are no chemicals lifting away our natural protective barrier, the formula doesn’t create the bubbles which are actually just there to look pretty! However, with a fair amount of ‘poo which I combed through to the ends, it needed some serious rinsing. Apparently I wouldn’t need conditioner, as conditioner and other “repairing” products are normally used to mask the harm that shampoo causes, so I carried on with my everyday hair care routine. Thankfully, with short hair, I very rarely use a dryer. I am actually very low maintenance, which is another reason to be tempted by one product to wash and go. However, I did add some serum, which possibly wasn't the best outcome for my first go, as in all honesty, after the first wash, it wasn’t as perky as I would have liked. In fact, you could say it was pretty flat. However, I persevered, and even though my hair felt like I had just come out of the swimming pool or sea, I managed a couple of days before another wash. This time was a vast improvement! I knew what I was getting myself into, and washed and rinsed in record time. My hair seemed glossier too- as if it was coming out of its shell. After a week of using New Wash my hair was staying to feel in its optimum natural state. Although I miss the scent of my regular shampoo for brunettes, I can definitely appreciate the effects of New Wash, and with a theory of prevention being better than cure- by using Hairstory products, I shouldn’t’ have to go back and fix anything.
